March is Women's History Month, a time to honor incredible women who lead and inspire. At Tanque Verde Ranch in Tucson, we celebrate women like Mary Ellen McBee. For nearly thirteen years, she has played a pivotal role in the ranch's success. As the Director of Sales, she embodies the spirit of mentorship and collaboration. Her journey is one of resilience and passion, making her a remarkable leader.

Mary Ellen joined Tanque Verde Ranch in June 2013. However, her journey began long before that. While working at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson, she partnered with the ranch's previous Director of Sales. This connection ignited her interest in the ranch. He introduced her to the ranch's unique offerings and encouraged her to explore potential opportunities.

Mary Ellen's visit to the ranch sealed her fate. She felt an instant connection to the land and its people. Shortly after, she became a part of the Tanque Verde family. Within a year, she stepped into the Director of Sales role, where she thrives today.

A Life Shaped by Travel

Mary Ellen's upbringing shaped her future. She was born in Bourne, Massachusetts, a gateway to Cape Cod. Growing up in a military family, she moved frequently. Her father served in the Air Force, taking the family across New England and even to Turkey. Eventually, they settled in California and later in Arizona. These experiences fostered adaptability and curiosity.

Her varied childhood prepared her for a dynamic career in hospitality. She learned to embrace new environments and cultures. This adaptability became essential in her role at Tanque Verde Ranch.

What Collaboration and Mentorship Means to Mary Ellen

"But the people behind those details matter even more." Mary Ellen listens carefully to her team. She leads by example and values every contribution. Her leadership is guided by three core principles: integrity, empath and resilience. These values shape the culture within the sales team and across the ranch.

Mentorship is a passion for Mary Ellen. She finds joy in helping people grow. Before joining Tanque Verde Ranch, she managed restaurants. In that role, she trained employees in guest service and leadership skills. She created training manuals to ensure success.

Now, she brings that same enthusiasm to her team at Tanque Verde Ranch. Many employees start at entry-level positions and advance over time. "Watching someone learn and gain confidence is rewarding," she reflects. She celebrates every team member's journey, even when they move on to new opportunities.

A Collaborative Team Culture

Collaboration fuels success in the sales office. Team members work closely together. They share ideas and listen to each other's calls with clients. This teamwork fosters a learning environment where everyone grows. Mary Ellen encourages an open atmosphere. Team members build knowledge and confidence together. This collaborative spirit strengthens the entire ranch.

Mary Ellen finds joy in every contract signed. Each week, the sales team tracks their progress and celebrates achievements. This friendly competition fosters excitement. Team spirit runs high, especially when the ranch comes together for a special event.

One memorable occasion involved organizing a rodeo experience for a corporate group. This was a first for the ranch. Pulling it off required all hands on deck. "Everyone worked together to make it happen," she recalls. Moments like that show the teamwork and creativity at Tanque Verde Ranch.

Mary Ellen attributes her success to an early mentor. This director at the Westin La Paloma taught her essential skills. "She taught me everything I know," Mary Ellen shares. The mentorship shaped her career and instilled a passion for hospitality.
